I have been staring at this for hours, trying to think through the possibilities and it is a bit mind boggling. It is an interesting - so many ways for Black to mess up if they are not cooperating

Yep... 
Although it should be tried in real life (you have to find 2 volunteers of course) because I think it wouldn't be playable on the internet: I guess there will be too many waiting time between each move of the participants.
