Hi there plasma,
You can get this game second-hand from e-bay - i just had a look and they had one listed under "hnefatafl" (see picture) but horribly over-priced
hnefatafl2.jpg
you should normally be able to get one for less than 10. Try also looking under "The Viking Game", though the results will mostly be video games, there are usually a few hnefatafl sets in there too.

These sets are made by History Craft and used to sell through the "Past Times" store (now gone bust). The mouldings are lovely, solid resin with a pleasing weight to them. There are 2 different mouldings of the pieces; try to get the ones where the pieces have wider bases (as in the picture) rather than the narrow ones, which fall over too easily. If the photo shows the inside of the box, you want a set where the pieces are in small plastic bags, not set into a foam insert (those would be the narrow ones). I recommend buying a set just to get the pieces, and making your own board, as I personally don't like the cloth board supplied. The edges curl up and it never lies totally flat. A wooden board is much better, mine is just a piece of fibre-board with the lines drawn on.

I hope that is some help, otherwise, ask again!!

All the best

Just found this video on youtube about one way to make your own hnefatafl set, and a brief intro to the rules.

They also do some great working model catapults! http://www.stormthecastle.com/catapult/index.htm

It might be a little pricey if it's an international purchase but www.norseamerica.com sells a nice set. At least concerning the pieces.

I ordered my History-Craft "The Viking Game" set from NorseAmerica. Quick service.

I have no skill at creating things by hand so here are some of the random sets I have found:

Cyningstan's shop sells a few different sets including the History-Craft "The Viking Game" set. UK based Worldwide Shipping.

Jack Windsor of Ignited Arts and Designs does some great sets if you are willing to spend the money and wait the ~3 weeks it takes to make it. He does 7x7, 9x9, 11x11, and there used to be a 13x13 on there but I am sure he would make you one if you really wanted one so just send him a message. The History-Craft pieces do fit on these though I love the included pieces and he also offers various "upgrades" with fancier pieces and board materials. Aside from his premium full size boards he does smaller 'travel sets' with peg-holes and also folding sets. Worldwide Shipping.

This is the one he did for me:

Wood Expressions makes a nice looking Tablut set but I have never seen one in person. Available on US Amazon(Called "King's Table") but not sure where else.

I urge caution when looking at other sellers on Etsy as there is a lot of junk out there.

Sorry for the late notice - I was absent for quite some time. It highly depends on what you are looking for. I mainly play on simple traveling sets as I call them, they basically consist of glass nuggets of the corresponding colors (I prefer black for black, white for white and red for the king) and a simple printed board that is foldable so it easily fits into a usual folder I carry around anyways.

These sets don't suffer from problem with figures with unstable stand, are incredible robust and easy to carry around without taking up much space nor weight. I basically haven't played for two years now, but I still carry a game set around if I find somebody to play with.

If you are interested in one of these simple sets just drop me a quick note. Especially if you are living inside the EU, shipping shouldn't be an issue.

If you are looking for something with a more viking like style, I don't know where to get a decent one. Despite seeing a few awesome sets, I have to admit that all the sets, that I'd recommend without hesitating, were hand crafted...

I have an idea that I did never tested. It's not necessary to buy the game (Except for those who want really to buy it) because you can print an image on the board like one of these or make one with your hands or computer.

9x9 board : http://wellouej.free.fr/menus/animation ... tablut.jpg

Another 9x9 board : http://www.labbe.de/spielotti/mathemati ... tablut.jpg

11x11 board : http://www.jamesadamshistoricenterprise ... ntable.jpg

Another 11x11 board : https://img00.deviantart.net/c832/i/201 ... 3i4lx7.jpg

An 11x11 board again : https://i.pinimg.com/736x/6f/b5/4f/6fb5 ... dieval.jpg

For the pawns and the king you can take those from draught set or a cheese set if you don't want to make it with yours hands or a 3D printer.
If you haven't a draught set or a cheese set. You can buy BIC pens and use pen caps.
My advice is to buy between four and five packs.

The printing of the board is kinda precisely what I do for these travel sets. I have different gameboards, but I still prefer the self printed ones, since they exactly reflect what I expect from a game board.

I'd advise against pen caps. They aren't nice visually and rather difficult to place.

A set of checkers is ok, if you play only inside, but the pieces are usually rather light so the wind can easily blow away the sheet of paper you are playing on...and even if you fix that (my usual method is gluing that piece of paper onto a cardboard) sometimes a single piece is moved by the wind.

Glass nuggets are easy distinguishable, easy to handle, not to light, practically impossible to knock over on accident and very cheap.

Ofc hand crafted sets (probably also 3D-printed sets - I have little experience with those) can be much better. There is no limit to the imagination...
