Unst versions

Post by Hagbard » Tue Mar 21, 2017 8:17 pm

The Shetland island Unst is attributed a couple of unusual rules and tafl variants.

King hammer only.
The rule of the king capturing as hammer only and not as anvil, is actually one of the options mentioned by David Brown.

Pieces captured from three sides.
Alea Evangelii 19x19 played on Unst is said to have four special defenders, which must be captured from three sides instead of the usual two sides.

We tested these variants (king hammer only, on board 11x11), but they were not found to work especially well, so these special rules are shelved for now.

Variants like the hammer-only, capture from 3 sides and one-step-per-move are shelved for now.

Theory:
Those variants are probably earlier attempts by people who had problems with rules which wouldn't work.
