Re: Brandubh on Jocly

I hadn't realised the Brandub rules on Jocly had a limited move for the pieces. I don't think any game of eight attackers will work very well if you have to use half your army to surround the king. I've just played an 11x11 game against the computer. It uses Murray''s old rules, with a strong king w...

Event leaflet with rules

I thought it high time I let people here know that there's an event leaflet available for the Hull Hnefatafl tournament. As well as giving the event details, I managed to squeeze the game rules on there too.

You can download the leaflet here.

Re: Hull Hnefatafl Tournament 2017

Unfortunately my friends live on the west side of the Island so I will likely only attend on Saturday unless my inept American brain figures out the public transport system of the UK and the timetables under which it operates allows it. Being an American I am eager to learn of public transport and ...

Hull Hnefatafl Tournament 2017

I'm giving some early publicity for a hnefatafl event next year, so if anyone here is interested it gives you time to make some travel plans. I'll be hosting a Hnefatafl tournament in Hull on Saturday 17th June 2017. That falls during Hull's year as the UK City of Culture, so there'll be plenty of o...

Re: Scottish Ard Ri 7x7

I certainly like the idea better than the one I came up with (weaponless king), and I'm pleasantly surprised that removing the throne's protection is enough to make the game balanced. I'll be keeping an eye on this and keeping my fingers crossed that the balance holds up with further play. Though sa...

Re: Historical Evidence for 11 x 11 boards

The only direct evidence I know of for an 11x11 board is the one from Trondheim. It's pictured at the bottom of this page . It doesn't have corner markings, though. I don't know of any evidence for marked corners on this size of board. The only boards I know of that have marked corners are the 7x7 b...

Re: 15x15 tafl

This is an interesting board I hadn't encountered before. As a paid-up member of the awkward squad, I see an alternative interpretation of the find, though. The marked square near the top of the fragment looks very much like the central square on the 13x13 Bergen board, which uses a * for the centre...

Re: Member introductions

I'm Damian Walker, from Hull in England. By day I'm a web developer. By night I try not to be, but often fail miserably. I discovered hnefatafl in about 2002, along with a lot of other interesting traditional board games, in a 1989 book by Jack Botermans, The World of Games. While I'm interested in ...

Re: Classic game books

What precisely do you want to know? I have both. Murray's full description is nine pages long, but I can give you his introductory paragraph that contains the gameplay. Scandinavia and Iceland: Tafl, hnefatafl (HC. 445); Pre-conquest England: Tafl; Wales: Tawlbwrdd (F. R. Lewis); Ireland: name unrec...

Re: Saami Tablut

Summary on the Saami Tablut: http://aagenielsen.dk/tablut_summary.php An interesting branch to this story might be Imperial Contest, which is almost the same game, with the additional rules of a 4-square maximum move for the king and capture of only one piece at a time. I'm not sure if it had any i...
