Working variants for different board sizes
Hello tafl warriors, Let's discuss here the different tafl variants in order to find out the best working and well-balanced variants. In my opinion, the balance is not everything.Of course, the variant must be well-balanced but it also needs to be entertaining and nice to play. For example, the Sea...

Re: 9x9 Corner Win
As I thought, this variant is in favour of the whites. If you make the king to be unarmed, it will be in huge favour of the blacks. If the king is unarmed, the whites should win by reaching the edge and not the corners like in the so called Sea Battle variants. In my opinion, we just need to get rid...

Re: 9x9 Corner Win
Let's play this variant correspondently. I would like to check it. I can play with the whites in the first game. We can start a new not rated game with time x 10 in any other variant, for example in the Copenhagen variant and just use this game to exchange moves in the chat. After the game is over, ...

Re: 9x9 Corner Win
Although I have never tried this variant, it seems for me unbalanced and strange. I think it will be almost imposible for the whites to lose the game. The strong king captured from 4 sides will be pratically immortal. The blacks will need to block the corners and they will need to involve 12 vikings...

Re: 9x9 Corner Win
Yes, there are some variants like Skalk Hnefatafl but they are not well-balanced. It is really difficult for the whites to reach the corner in 9x9 especially if the king is weak. If the king is strong and is captured from four sides, then it is little bit easier but the blacks still have advantage.

Re: Move First, Kill First
I think this rule is more restrictive and will lessen the complexity of the game. Now, when the king or an ordinary piece can enter between two enemy pieces, the game is more complex and both sides have more tactical opportunities.

Re: Comparison of the tafl world champions
Here are some stats for Jilles regarding his performance in the Copenhagen variant. I think he is a great weak king player (one of the strongest weak king players ever). However, in the Copenhagen variant, he is still not experienced and he played only against four opponents more than 5 games. You c...

Re: Comparison of the tafl world champions
Here are the stats for OdinHimself. He is really a strong player and in my opinion the strongest player who has never managed to become a world champion yet. As you can see from the table, he was very dominant against players who are not world champions. See how he played against all of these strong...
