Re: Named move patterns

The position “Twin Towers” can be seen in Saami Tablut too, here is an example from a real game (2019-07-12, Crust — Ded Fomich, 61 moves):

Re: World Tafl Federation

That’s an interesting trick about a ghost player and in general nice idea to give players an opportunity of getting a title regardless tafl variant they prefer. Simultaneously it’s not very easy to get, a player has to be permanently involved in playing games for a long time. It could be an interest...

Re: World Tafl Federation

Actually, there has come a special interest in the 9x9 version of Historical Hnefatafl, the Saami Tablut 9x9, in the Norwegian Sápmi (Mikkel Berg-Nordlie, "Mihkkal") and in the Moscow Geek Wars club (Alexander V. Fomichev, "Ded Fomich"). Hell yes! In my case, it’s an interest which borders on the o...

Re: World Tafl Federation

If we are to fully accept the conception of the grandmaster’s title which is very difficult to get and the format of tournaments with at least 4 grandmasters or at least 8 players rated 1800 and higher, then, in my view, we need a bigger community, more active high-rated players and a regulation on ...

Re: Tafl in Russia

Without the throne, the 9x9 game (no forbidden corners, king wins on edge) will probably be less balanced in favour of the attackers, as the throne probably gives the king some protection. But actually we did never test if it is so. Yes, obviously that’s not a good idea, at least with the standard ...

Re: Tafl in Russia

Last Saturday (17.02.2018) a Tavlei tournament took place at the same location (the hobby centre “Geek Wars” in Moscow), this event was organised by Dmitriy Pashkov. The used rules set was “Skalk Hnefatafl 9×9 (ExpoMedia) − defender’s capture against the throne even if the king is standing on it + t...

Re: Tafl in Russia

I think that they just had no need to travel so far. They probably were reasonably prudent people, so they had no reason to discover new wild and perhaps not mastered territories, they already had a lot of opportunities. They could settle down in the land of big rich cities (in Rus’ or in Byzantium,...

Re: Tafl in Russia

How far into Russia did the Vikings penetrate ? The East Slavs were going hand in hand with the Vikings (the Varangians), the cultural penetration was very deep. The Varangian Rurik was invited by several rival tribes (not only Slavs) to stop infighting and put things right. By the way, Rurik, his ...
